Electroless Nickel Plating

Electroless Nickel Plating is an application that provides a durable surface coating. Also known as Chemical or Autocatalytic Nickel Plating, this application provides significant advantages, including a uniform coating growth that, in most cases, eliminates the need for subsequent machining.

The result is similar to Electroplating, but the process is done without the use of electricity. Rather, it utilizes a chemical reaction to bond the coating to the substrate.

The three main types of Electroless Nickel Plating are:

  • Nickel-Phosphorous — Primarily used for engineering applications, and is measured by phosphorous content for levels of wear-resistance and corrosion protection.
  • Nickel-Boron — Features a higher as-plated hardness than nickel-phosphorous, and is often used in industrial applications.
  • Poly Alloys — These composite platings are often developed for special applications.
